Medical Uses: Tavneos is a complement 5a receptor (C5aR) antagonist used in conjunction with standard therapy including glucocorticoids, as an adjunctive treatment of adult individuals with severe active anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis. This medicinal product does not eliminate glucocorticoid use.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dosage of the Tavneos capsule is 30 mg (three capsules of 10 mg) twice a day, with meal. Do not crush, chew, or open. If any particular dose is missed or skipped, the patient should wait until the usual scheduled time to take the very next regular dose. It is not advisable to take a couple of dosages simultaneously.
- Liver test panel (ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, and total bilirubin) needs to be obtained before initiating treatment with Tavneos 10 mg capsules. This medication is not recommended for use in patients with cirrhosis, basically those with serious hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C).
- Patients must be screened for Hepatitis B Virus infection by measuring anti-HBc and HBsAg. For patients with evidence of previous or current HBV infection, consult with an experienced doctor in managing hepatitis B regarding monitoring and consideration for HBV antiviral therapy prior to or during therapy with Tavneos.
- Avacopan may be responsible for causing angioedema. In case angioedema appears, discontinue therapy with Tavneos 10 mg capsules promptly, provide suitable therapy, and assess for airway compromise.
- Severe infections, including fatal infections, may occur in those receiving Tavneos. Pneumonia and urinary tract infections are commonly reported infections. Avoid the use of this medication in those with an active, severe infection, including localized infections.
- Use of Avacopan capsule is not recommended in pregnant women and in females of childbearing age not considered contraception. Nursing mothers should also avoid the use of this medicinal product
